WINNER OF SOUTH AFRICAN CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY WEEK HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG [December 2021]

VON ARA Honoured at South African Contemporary Jewellery Week 2021

In December 2021, I had the privilege of participating in the South African Contemporary Jewellery Week Awards, held at the University of Johannesburg in Gauteng. This national event celebrates innovation and excellence in contemporary jewellery design across the country—and I was humbled to be among the featured artists.

As VON ARA, I entered a selection of pieces from my MAVA body of work into the competition, never imagining the outcome that would follow. To my immense gratitude and surprise, I was awarded the Professional Category Award—a moment that remains one of the proudest highlights of my creative journey to date.

Building a Studio, Building a Dream

The prize included a financial award, which I used to invest in equipment for my personal jewellery studio—laying the groundwork for the independent, artist-led practice that VON ARA is today. This recognition was not just a win, but a powerful vote of confidence in the vision and voice behind my work.

The experience of exhibiting alongside fellow artists and being acknowledged by industry leaders left a lasting impact. It reminded me that vulnerability, authenticity, and artistic risk are not only worth taking—they are necessary for growth.

Reflecting on the Journey

Looking back, this award marked a turning point. It validated years of exploration, experimentation, and dedication to jewellery as a medium for storytelling and self-expression. And more importantly, it fueled the next chapter of VON ARA—equipping me, quite literally, to dream bigger.
